Article Highlights

Article Title: Math site is good addition as interactive teaching guide

Word from the WebWise: Math Goodies offers a free, educational area with 42 interactive math lessons. This site uses in-depth problems to help students in fifth through eighth grades acquire the necessary skills to be our next engineers, astrophysicists and computer scientists.

An invaluable section of the site, "Math Chat", contains a set of message boards offering a wide variety of subjects such as "Homeschooling Support", where home-schooling families can share information; "Real World Connections", which discusses practical applications of mathematics; and "Homework Help", which has real teachers who help students with a variety of math problems on line.

Family Activity: An avalanche of printable crosswords and word searches can be found under the [Puzzles] section. The challenges give the entire clan a fun way to stay sharp with math and nomenclature. The puzzles fit nicely on a printed sheet and would make a great time killer for long car rides.

Cybersitter synopsis: Like it or not, students need to recognize the importance of math in their lives.  Math Goodies does an excellent job providing a safe haven to quickly sharpen skills.  Mrs. Glosser keeps banner ads off lesson pages and carefully monitors message boards for inappropriate content.

Information Grade: A+
